Together with Brightfiber, we set the bar for sustainable knitwear at an unmatched height.
On Thursday, November 20, we will open our largest pop up yet at Haarlemmerplein 2 and launch our first knitwear line, developed in collaboration with Brightfiber from recycled cotton. A milestone we are happy to explain here and celebrate with you during the Launch Event on November 21.
Many fashion brands already claim that something is recycled when just a few plastic bottles have been added to their textiles. Not only does that make the material difficult to recycle (you mix cotton with polyester), but in many cases, the plastic bottles are even specially produced to be labeled as “recycled.”
Fortunately, behind the scenes, ambitious innovators are working hard on real circular solutions. We joined forces with circular textile producer Brightfiber and set the bar for sustainable knitwear higher than ever. Never before have the percentages of recycled post consumer waste been this high.
As we are known for upcycling rejected linen from the luxury hotel industry, we have a mission to create sustainable clothing that is actually desirable. A feeling of luxury, extremely high quality, and exceptional design are central. For more than a year and a half, the team worked on a knitwear line that met our high standards, and eventually we found in Brightfiber the perfect partner to make that happen.
The Floyd Sweater was born: a unisex model in two colourways.
One in an elegant deep anthracite blue, and one playful melange of ice grey, blue, and fresh green. The cropped model has a half high neckline and is finished with a wide statement rib at the bottom, with two stripes along the forearm continuing up to the elbow as a nod to the split in MARTAN’s very first shirt.
The facts:
70% recycled cotton
More than half of which is post consumer waste, clothing collected in containers across the Netherlands. Brightfiber has developed special machines that can sort by fibre and composition, ensuring that only pure cotton is used for this sweater. This is supplemented with cotton cutting scraps from clothing factories that would otherwise be discarded (post industrial waste).
30% lyocell
To ensure strength, softness, and longevity, the yarn is complemented with 30% lyocell, a cellulose based fibre produced in a closed loop process. All chemicals and water used in this production are recovered and reused, unlike many other processes in which they are discharged as waste.
Colour
Thanks to the precise sorting process, discarded garments are sorted directly by colour. Within each colour group, new yarns can be spun without the need for additional dyeing.
Mono-material
The result is a fully cellulose mono-material sweater, which can easily be recycled again in the future.
Each sweater includes a QR code in the hangtag that allows you to view the full Life Cycle Analysis, another step towards complete transparency in the fashion industry.
